As with yesterday we begin our journey by bus to the small town of Ky Anh. We then revert to peddle power to negotiate the Ngang Pass. This mountainous coastal area forms part of what is known as the Transversal Range stretching from the Laos border to the sea along the 18th parallel. Our destination for tonight is the fishing port of Dong Hoi.
Day 5: Dong Hoi - Phong Nha - Dong Hoi (B-L-D)
Following breakfast we cycle 44km to the spectacular Phong Nha cave. The cave is probably the most beautiful and certainly the largest in Vietnam. The cave lies in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and UNESCO recently designated the area as the country fifth World Heritage Site. The park has some beautiful limestone formations, grottoes and caves as well as many 1,000m plus unexplored peaks. After having explored the cave we return by bicycle to Dong Hoi along part of the famous Ho Chi Minh Trail.
Day 6: Dong Hoi - Nuoc Mooc (B-L-D)
Travel from Dong Hoi to Chay Lap Village in the morning, then take an underground river dragon boat tour into Phong Nha Cave. Then explore the village while participating in various social and cultural activities such as: pond fishing, planting and gardening, or even playing volleyball with the local youth. In the evening, witness the music, dance, and costumed drama of a traditional Tuong Opera.
Day 7: Chay Lap Village - Ha Tinh (B-L-D)
After a peaceful night in a traditional house with modern conveniences, leave for an all day biking and trekking excursion into the park. Bike to the war memorial site of Tam Co Cave along a road following the historic Ho Chi Minh Trail. Next, bike to the Nuoc Mooc Cold Spring and Eco-Trail for a guided hike and a refreshing swim in the cold spring. Along the bike route home you may be able to see families of the endangered Ha Tinh Langur primates.
Day 8: Chay Lap - Dong Hoi (B-L-D)
After another night at the village homestay, jump into a kayak and paddle along the clear blue Chay River that cuts a ravine through the jungle draped limestone karst mountains. Paddle into the expansive mouth of the Dark Cave to peer into its shadowy inner caverns. After returning to Chay Lap, learn to cook a traditional Vietnamese meal before either exploring more of the river on the kayak, visiting a botanical garden, or simply relaxing in the village. Return to Dong Hoi in the late afternoon.
Day 9: Dong Hoi - Dong Ha -Vinh Moc - Dong Ha (B-L-D)
Today we continue south along Highway 1 using both our bicycles and our support vehicle. We reach the town of Dong Ha where we stay for the night. Here we will visit Vinh Moc tunnels to see at first hand how the Viet Cong fought. The stretch of tunnels runs for nearly 3km and have not been altered for the tourists benefit.
